The new Suerte brunch is a welcome addition to the myriad of restaurants that have cropped up along East 6th street. The nationally recognized, Mexican-inspired East Austin restaurant centered on craft-made masa dishes has expanded its menu to include brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Executive chef Fermín Núñez has designed the menu to reflect Suerte’s take on freshly baked Mexican pastries, brunch tacos, and of course, eggs.
“I like to think of the brunch menu as a new album from our kitchen,” Núñez said. “We are still grinding the masa every morning and cooking with ingredients from the farmers, but people crave different food for brunch than for dinner. Brunch is one of my favorite meals to cook and share with people. Cooking eggs can be so rewarding if you do it right every time, which is something we are going to strive for in every dish the kitchen puts out.”
Highlights include Pan Dulces or pastries that include vanilla conchas, palmiers with cajeta, Meyer lemon curd stuffed donuts, and pear and cheese danishes. If savory is more your speed, I highly recommend the Shrimp Tostada served loaded with avocado, chile oil, crema, and cabbage. The tostada itself offers a tremendous amount of flavor, as well as the perfect crunch.
Their Tacos menu includes vegetarian and meat options, and one taco comes per order. You can choose from El Governator: red chile tortilla, snapper, quesillo; Avo Taco: crispy caldera cheese, sweet pepper pico; Chorizo: green tomato y sorrel salsita, potato, chorizo; Lengua: bacon refried beans, beef tongue, tomato; and the Butternut Squash: pumpkin seed macha, y sweet corn salsa.
When it comes to heartier menu items, you’ll have a variety of egg dishes and platters to choose from. One of the crowd favorites is the Entomatadas made with tomato guajillo salsa, epazote, and chicken huevo, and one of their more innovative dishes is their take on Migas served with soft scrambled eggs, chips, hollandaise, and chili oil. One of my favorites was the Pork Y Huevo dish, served with tender cashew braised pork, a lightly poached egg, crispy and crunch hominy, and tortillas on the side.
“Even before we opened for dinner, I’ve always thought that Suerte brunch was going to be a lot of fun,” said owner Sam Hellman-Mass. “Mexican food is kind of cheating for brunch because it’s just so good—warm corn tortillas, salsa, eggs and maybe something sweet. We’ll have freshly brewed hot coffee to wake you up, micheladas and mid-morning cocktails to cure your hangover, and as Fermin always says, ‘Lots of good vibes.’”
Suerte’s brunch dishes range in price from $3.50 for tacos, $5 for pastries, $10-$13 for the tostadas, and $13-$21 for mains. They are located at 1800 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78702.
